"ST. LOUIS" on road jerseys

I just noticed that Mitchell & Ness released this jersey from the 30's. I really think the Cardinals should go back to St. Louis on the road jerseys. What do you all think?

My Picks/Guess For Offseason Pickups

It's highly unlikely that the Cards are going to spend BIG $$$ on an impact (to have impact or make contact forcefully: [i:a8f635ee4c]The ball impacted against the bat with a loud noise[/i:a8f635ee4c].) bat, not when you have caliber players such as Pujols, Ludwick, Glaus and Ankiel. But their needs are, or rather should be, aimed towards a "leadoff" type of hitter like Furcal who can get on base ahead of Pujols.

Jimmy Rollins	            1605
Rafael Furcal	             506

He will be 31 as of the 24th of this month, which is not old by any means, but his having back surgery concerns me. From my experience, of "hearing" of those who have had back surgery, they have never been the same. Will this be the case with Furcal? Furcal' best season, as far as his OBP, is this year (.439), but he also only played in 36 regular season games prior to his sugery, with the most games played back in '06, in which he put up better than average numbers. But of course a healthy Furcal could match or enhance those numbers. The question is, at almost 31 years of age how long of a contract do you sign him to? [b:a8f635ee4c]IF[/b:a8f635ee4c] the Cards were to sign Furcal here's how I forsee their '09 lineup.....

Cardinals to buy Memphis Redbirds

Smart move for the Cardinals, since Memphis is the 2nd most valuable franchise in the minor leagues, according to Forbes.

The only downside is that the Memphis Redbirds operate as a not-for-profit organization, which will probably no longer be the case once the big club moves in. [2 total replies]

Agreed. This past season was his best, so some regression is to be expected. Reliever performance can be pretty erratic from year to year anyway. [17 total replies]

CCH Report Card, Part IV (Relievers and Team)

I'd have to say that the relief failed due to a couple factors. One, they didn't have much help from the starters. The starters only averaged 6 innings per start. That's average mind you. That means there were several times they didn't make it to 6. You put that much pressure, wear, and tear on the BP and it will hurt over the long haul.

Second, we don't have the best talent in the world in our BP. There were plenty of individual failures.

Third, not having a "closer" (I hate that moniker), didn't help the stability of the BP.

I'd give the bullpen an overall score of F.

*** I'd give most teams in the league bad scores for pitching starters, or relievers. I just can't seem to accept the notion that a starter is considered having a good start if they go 6 innings. Relief pitching seems to be a widespread hit or miss throughout the leagues. In my opinion, a starter should go 7 minimum. I'm not saying that they should go CG like they used to, but there is a certain laziness that has crept into pitchers over the decades. A setup man, and "closer" (yuk), is all you should need in any given game. So, take my pitching grades with a grain of salt. :wink: I'm biased towards the past. [6 total replies]

[b:25f63a5b24]Baxter drives Saguaros past Scorpions[/b:25f63a5b24]
Padres prospect goes 3-for-3 with four RBIs
By John Torenli / Special to MLB.com

Mike Baxter couldn't wait to get going in the Arizona Fall League. He made the most of his debut with the Peoria Saguaros.
The San Diego outfield prospect had a perfect day, going 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs to lead the unbeaten Saguaros past the Scottsdale Scorpions, 10-7, on Wednesday.

Baxter, who batted .264 with nine homers and 65 RBIs between Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio this year, didn't see any action in the Saguaros' season-opening 9-3 victory over the Scorpions on Tuesday.

"It was good to start playing again," said Baxter, who hadn't faced live pitching since the Missions were swept out of the Texas League playoffs by the Frisco RoughRiders on Sept. 6. "I only get to play on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so getting at-bats is always good."

The Padres' fourth-round pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft made up for lost time in a hurry. He lifted a sacrifice fly to spark a five-run second inning, drilled his first double of the fall in the third, slapped an RBI single in the fifth and capped a decisive four-run rally in the eighth with a two-RBI base hit.

[quote:649a7272d3="ZoDogg"]One of the problems in baseball is the guys like George Kissell and Hub Kittle are dwindling.

The more GM's you get that are the "Mo" types that are the saber-metric numbers geeks that have never stepped on a ball field in their lives, the more the true baseball lifers go away.
These numbers guys wouldn't know a five tool player if he got hit in the face with the tools.

How can an organization have a director of player development and scouting who comes from a finance and economics background? It's ridiculous.[/quote:649a7272d3]

I so much agree with you both! George Kissell was what Baseball is about. I'll miss him, but I will always remember we were better because he was a Cardinal who could teach the 'Cardinal Way' to play Baseball!

[quote:fa067245f2="wheresmyurinal"]
I grade on results vs. expectations. I expected more than 11 wins from him this season. Whether it's slowed by performance or injury matters not to me. I guess you would give someone an A for riding the bench well? His performance this year put him on track for a great year. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Thus my grade of B for the season.

A = Exceeded expectations by a wide margin
B = Performed above expectations
C = Performed as expected
D = Underperfomed
F = Why are you in the majors?[/quote:fa067245f2]

Huh??? So you are basically grading them by taking what your projected their stats to be before the season, then comparing them to what they turned out to be, with no other things considered..? If thats the case then Pujols must be a C.

Im glad you arent one of my professors in law school because I would never get anything above a C. [7 total replies]

I'm not one disagreeing with ya this time :wink: I liked the trade and I'm not down on Mo just yet. He's right about at his 1st full year as GM and has done some nice things, I think we'll get an idea on what kind of GM he'll be here soon but Mr. DeWitt has got to let him do his job though.
Luddy- A ( A+ if he wasn't so streaky)

Skip- B (would without a doubt be an A if he could hit lefties better)

Ankiel- C+- Dude has got to stay healthy

Duncan- Yeah, I bet ya'll were betting I'd give him an F but I give him and Incomplete for the overall season but if we are grading defense he gets an F. He has not improved AT ALL and has got to be one of the worst we've seen.

Barton- Incomplete I want to see him after a full year in AAA or have TLR give him more chances if he is here.

Mather- C .....still young but showed he can play defense, has got to learn those breaking pitches better.

Stavi- D......I don't know if he's ready for the ML's but he didn't show me a whole lot after doing pretty good in AAA.

I hope nobody expects me to grade FeLo, Miles and Kennedy in the OF :wink: [8 total replies]

For the right reasons it is good to have Dave back. Another year with Kyle and Wellemeyer is a postive.

Carp's Career in Doubt Because of Arm Damage?

[quote:c50f52d454="Avenge02"]He should start on opening day whether he has surgery or not. All of the specialists agreed that he does not need surgery to recover. Unfortunately, the specialists were unable to come to a consensus over whether the surgery would fix the problem or not. The hope is not that he will be healthy to start the season, but that the issue will not come up again. He did get through 2005-2007+ without this issue coming back. There is no reason for fans to not be optomistic. The front office is optomistic, but they are also aware of the potential risks and will deal with them accordingly. They won't go get an ace, but maybe someone to challenge Piniero or McClellan.[/quote:c50f52d454]

Pujols Again Is Potential MVP

If all of the blow-hard writers would define the award, then you wouldn't have this issue. They wouldn't do this, because they wouldn't be able to justify their picks. They have a free ticket to pick whomever they want. The MLB MVP is probably the worst, and most least respected award of any in any sport. I also have a serious issue with non-athletes (majority of them at least), who never have played on a major league level themselves, voting for any award of any kind. I respect the player and coach voted on awards the most. [38 total replies]

All other points...well, this picture describes my feelings nicely:

[img:bb7618bd14]http://www.gardenofeden.net/lil/failboat.jpg[/img:bb7618bd14]

Honestly, the people that need to go are the players who lie and hide injuries. That is so selfish, in my opinion. Every time you run out there and play, you not only risk the outcome of games (Izzy) you make the chances greater of your injuries becoming worse and threatening the team even further. How do you stop that? Well, I have no idea...but there has to be more open communication somehow. I would think a certain doctor would recognize symptoms... [15 total replies]

[quote:07a3a03cec="chevyman58"]In 157 Games TLR has used 144 different lineups. Think about that, 144 different lineups. Also, that doesn't mean in the other 13 games he used the same lineup, I don't think we've seen one particular lineup more than 2-3 times.

That's not genius, that's insanity. You've got to really work at it to do that, really focus on TRYING to use different lineups intentionally just to do so. If not, just by accident, you'd repeat a lineup far more often than he has.

WHY has he done this??? WHY???? Insanity ......... I M O .[/quote:07a3a03cec]

Because TLR is a genius, he's only trying to leave his mark on the game of baseball. He also wanted to prove that an injured player really isn't injured, see Izzy, Ank, Dunc and Carp. :lol: [24 total replies]
