Official Thread: Election 2008

Republicans shouldn't despair about the polls. If the election was held tomorrow and McCain lost all they have to do is find a way to get it to the Supreme Court and come January the old guy will be getting sworn in.

As for CEOs believing Obama would be disastrous, it isn't like CEO's have done wonders for the country. The headline should read, "74% of people who will make tens of millions of dollars a year even if they do a bad job think Obama will be a disaster." Why doesn't the Obama-loving media print that? Affirmative action, surely.

Palin could have declared herself empress of alaska and the consort of god. but as long as she swears she'd let her raped daughter not abort and believes that Jesus is there in Iraq in spirit leading the holy war against Islam she'll have no shortage of people who worship the ground she walks on.
"ST. LOUIS" on road jerseys

I just noticed that Mitchell & Ness released this jersey from the 30's. I really think the Cardinals should go back to St. Louis on the road jerseys. What do you all think?

The East Side Panty Raiders would like to congrulate there 3 all-stars.

Ben Jones - Jones had one of his best seasons of his carear. He went 19-10, 2.77 era. He is a canadate for the Cy Young. he is making his 3rd appearence at the all-star game and second as a Panty Raider.

James Townsend - Townsend is appearing in his 5th straight all-star game. Fans have been spoiled by townsends numbers throughout his carear. 2024 was a down year for Townsend (.255-38-92 all season lows) and the Panty Raiders are looking for him to bust out big in the playoffs.

Alfred Moll - Alfred Moll was a team player this year. he was moved from SS after shakey fielding and did not complain one bit. Teams finally relized he is a base stealer and stopped him from running all over the team. Moll still managed 63 stolen bases. Set a carear high with 18 HR, 75 RBI's and 6 Triples.
ALCS: Rays vs. Bosox

I’m longing for a low-key, less-media-hyped, no-David-no-Goliath, Rays/Phillies match-up. We might actually get to see more baseball that way! So far, the Phillies are on track. We’ll see what happens when the series moves west. Matsuzaka pitched a great game last night, but I hope Kazimir can help split this first round before the Rays head north.

Having the championship series all in the same time zone might also mean potentially fewer sleep-deprived people. :)

That said, I’ve also decided that I will not get my panty-hose all in a knot if the FOX execs get their dream ratings match-up, and it ends up the “Boston/LA-Manny/BigPapi-Torre/Francona-DLowe/Papelbon-Nomar/Coco-etc./etc./etc.-show” that many seem to want. I just won’t be able to get all that excited about it. [25 total replies]

My Picks/Guess For Offseason Pickups

It's highly unlikely that the Cards are going to spend BIG $$$ on an impact (to have impact or make contact forcefully: [i:a8f635ee4c]The ball impacted against the bat with a loud noise[/i:a8f635ee4c].) bat, not when you have caliber players such as Pujols, Ludwick, Glaus and Ankiel. But their needs are, or rather should be, aimed towards a "leadoff" type of hitter like Furcal who can get on base ahead of Pujols.

Jimmy Rollins 1605
Rafael Furcal 506

He will be 31 as of the 24th of this month, which is not old by any means, but his having back surgery concerns me. From my experience, of "hearing" of those who have had back surgery, they have never been the same. Will this be the case with Furcal? Furcal' best season, as far as his OBP, is this year (.439), but he also only played in 36 regular season games prior to his sugery, with the most games played back in '06, in which he put up better than average numbers. But of course a healthy Furcal could match or enhance those numbers. The question is, at almost 31 years of age how long of a contract do you sign him to? [b:a8f635ee4c]IF[/b:a8f635ee4c] the Cards were to sign Furcal here's how I forsee their '09 lineup.....

[quote:43ea2ec21b="YawkeyWay"]Has anyone tried the new Budweiser American Ale?

I was in Shop and Save today, and they had a huge portion of the dry beer shelf dedicated to it. Slightly on sale, too, at about $6. Regretting buying it dry, since I have to wait for it to cool down before I can open one up.

At the very least, the guys at Beer Advocate are giving it a chance, which is surprising because of their snobbishness toward AB-InBev beers.[/quote:43ea2ec21b]

Yeah, I tried this a week or so ago, bought a 22oz. bomber from work.

It was ok. It reminded me a lot of O'Fallon Brewery's 5-Day IPA...a little watered down with a medium-hoppy finish.

Myself, I'm not wild about IPAs. If you're going to have that hoppy finish, I want complexity mixed in there as well. When I want I great tasting beer, I still gravitate towards Smithwicks, Boddington's, New Belgium Fat Tire, etc.

Still, frequent AB customers will be pleased with this beer as it is really very different from your pedestrian Bud/Bud Light/Michelob product. [46 total replies]

Cardinals to buy Memphis Redbirds

Smart move for the Cardinals, since Memphis is the 2nd most valuable franchise in the minor leagues, according to Forbes.

The only downside is that the Memphis Redbirds operate as a not-for-profit organization, which will probably no longer be the case once the big club moves in. [2 total replies]

[quote:ec14a51e9a="wheresmyurinal"][quote:ec14a51e9a="PLauderdale30"]bologna. Yes there are some true die-hard Cubs fans who care about the Cubs just as much as people around here care about the Cardinals, but as far as relating it to attendance at games in Wrigley it doesnt correlate. Half the crowd at Wrigley is just there because its a huge frat party and most of them couldnt even tell you 4 Cubs players, and thats before they start drinking. Going to Cubs games is all about being seen and being part of the crowd.

An easy indicator is how many good looking college age girls are at the games when they show them on TV. No offense to any ladies, because yes there are some ladies (usually older) who are great fans and are knowledgeable about the game, but the majority of college age girls are not going to know squat about the game, or even care about the Cubs, other than its the "cool" thing to do.[/quote:ec14a51e9a]

Attendance stats are available on the net. Feel free to look it up.
Here's one link http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teams/cubsatte.shtml

Have a problem with proof? Your response is typical.[/quote:ec14a51e9a]

Typical? Typical of what? Your response is proof of the fact that the Cubs attendance figures have risen over the last few years. Congrats. No where in any part of my response did I argue that their attendance figures are low, or have dropped. I argued quite the opposite. I argued the fact that the Cubs attendance over the last few years has risen in large part because of the circus that going to a Cubs game has become. The college party like atmosphere that has been created in the neighborhood and mostly in the stands. The fact that if they didnt sell alcohol at the game or on the rooftops, attendance would fall drastically.

I would like to know how any of that is typical, and further how showing attendance figures relates to that statement. [12 total replies]

CCH Report Card, Part IV (Relievers and Team)

I'd have to say that the relief failed due to a couple factors. One, they didn't have much help from the starters. The starters only averaged 6 innings per start. That's average mind you. That means there were several times they didn't make it to 6. You put that much pressure, wear, and tear on the BP and it will hurt over the long haul.

Second, we don't have the best talent in the world in our BP. There were plenty of individual failures.

Third, not having a "closer" (I hate that moniker), didn't help the stability of the BP.

I'd give the bullpen an overall score of F.

*** I'd give most teams in the league bad scores for pitching starters, or relievers. I just can't seem to accept the notion that a starter is considered having a good start if they go 6 innings. Relief pitching seems to be a widespread hit or miss throughout the leagues. In my opinion, a starter should go 7 minimum. I'm not saying that they should go CG like they used to, but there is a certain laziness that has crept into pitchers over the decades. A setup man, and "closer" (yuk), is all you should need in any given game. So, take my pitching grades with a grain of salt. I'm biased towards the past. [6 total replies]

Dallas Cowboys Football

From the article linked above:

[quote:89ab557d65]According to an investigation conducted by team security, the team official said Jones did get into a brief scuffle with the bodyguard that was assigned to the defensive back for a private event Tuesday night at a Dallas hotel.

[b:89ab557d65]The bodyguard, an off-duty policeman who is part of a security detail assigned to Jones, told team security that some "kidding around" and "playfulness" between himself and the player resulted in a brief scuffle in a restroom. A vanity mirror suffered minor damage.[/b:89ab557d65][/quote:89ab557d65]

For the cops to have been called, it had to have been a little worse than "playfulness" and "kidding around". Seriously, I just can't imagine Pacman Jones jostling around with a bodyguard for fun.

Hopefully the Cowboys can figure something out to keep Adam Jones out of trouble. I wasn't very happy they signed him in the first place, and this incident certainly doesn't help. I can understand the Cowboys being reluctant to punish Jones, since Newman is out for a few weeks, but something should still be done. [135 total replies]

Mike Baxter couldn't wait to get going in the Arizona Fall League. He made the most of his debut with the Peoria Saguaros.
The San Diego outfield prospect had a perfect day, going 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs to lead the unbeaten Saguaros past the Scottsdale Scorpions, 10-7, on Wednesday.

Baxter, who batted .264 with nine homers and 65 RBIs between Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio this year, didn't see any action in the Saguaros' season-opening 9-3 victory over the Scorpions on Tuesday.

"It was good to start playing again," said Baxter, who hadn't faced live pitching since the Missions were swept out of the Texas League playoffs by the Frisco RoughRiders on Sept. 6. "I only get to play on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so getting at-bats is always good."

The Padres' fourth-round pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft made up for lost time in a hurry. He lifted a sacrifice fly to spark a five-run second inning, drilled his first double of the fall in the third, slapped an RBI single in the fifth and capped a decisive four-run rally in the eighth with a two-RBI base hit.

[b:bc62d84080]McNabb input helps turn Juice loose
By Stu Durando
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
10/09/2008[/b:bc62d84080]

[img:bc62d84080]http://images.stltoday.com/stltoday/resources/juice625oct8.jpg[/img:bc62d84080]

The friendship between Juice Williams and Donovan McNabb began when the Illinois quarterback was in high school at a time when he hadn't yet started to tame his slingshot arm.

The Chicago connection transcended their 11-year age difference, creating what Williams calls a "close relationship,'' one that paid dividends during the summer and may have indirectly led to last Saturday's mammoth game at Michigan. Williams and the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback spent three days in Arizona, talking about their position and working out together.

"We talked about the basic fundamentals of being a quarterback,'' Williams said. "He doesn't know our offense but he can tell the things that help me learn about the offense. ... I brought that confidence back here and took it through camp and into the season.''

The junior gained national attention for the performance and re-emphasized his status as a contender for the Big Ten's offensive player of the year award. He was voted USA Today's national player of the week.

Given a bit more historical perspective, Williams' 431 total yards take on added stature:

— He had more yards of total offense than any player in Michigan Stadium history, spanning 509 games since 1927.

— He tied the record for the most total yards against the Wolverines in the program's 1,196 games since 1898.

— He became the first Illinois player to throw for 300 yards and run for 100 in the program's 1,120 games since 1890.

Greinke was good....but man, I can't stand his attitude. He walks around like he resents everyone. You don't even have to try and talk to him to see it. I used to think he acted the way he did because he was struggling. But it only seemed to get worse this past season the better he did. I just don't get him. [15 total replies]

This new creation will have the speed and defense of Izturis, as well as the offensive capabalities of Felipe Lopez.

[quote:649a7272d3="DD16"]RIP Mr. Kissell

You'll always be a Cardinal that is gone but not forgotten.

Best wishes for his family and friends.[/quote:649a7272d3]

[quote:649a7272d3="ZoDogg"]One of the problems in baseball is the guys like George Kissell and Hub Kittle are dwindling.

The more GM's you get that are the "Mo" types that are the saber-metric numbers geeks that have never stepped on a ball field in their lives, the more the true baseball lifers go away.
These numbers guys wouldn't know a five tool player if he got hit in the face with the tools.

How can an organization have a director of player development and scouting who comes from a finance and economics background? It's ridiculous.[/quote:649a7272d3]

I so much agree with you both! George Kissell was what Baseball is about. I'll miss him, but I will always remember we were better because he was a Cardinal who could teach the 'Cardinal Way' to play Baseball!

[quote:fa067245f2="wheresmyurinal"]
I grade on results vs. expectations. I expected more than 11 wins from him this season. Whether it's slowed by performance or injury matters not to me. I guess you would give someone an A for riding the bench well? His performance this year put him on track for a great year. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Thus my grade of B for the season.

A = Exceeded expectations by a wide margin
B = Performed above expectations
C = Performed as expected
D = Underperfomed
F = Why are you in the majors?[/quote:fa067245f2]

Huh??? So you are basically grading them by taking what your projected their stats to be before the season, then comparing them to what they turned out to be, with no other things considered..? If thats the case then Pujols must be a C.

Im glad you arent one of my professors in law school because I would never get anything above a C. [7 total replies]

[quote:3a4642646a="no_1cardinalfan"]I can tell I'm in the minority here in my support of Mozeliak, but you're all entitled to your own opinions as well.

I happen to think getting Glaus in exchange for Rolen, whom everyone knew we had to get rid of, was a good move. As was trading Edmonds for Freese, and signing Lohse.

You (and most other posters) happen to think otherwise. No big deal.[/quote:3a4642646a]

I'm not one disagreeing with ya this time  I liked the trade and I'm not down on Mo just yet. He's right about at his 1st full year as GM and has done some nice things, I think we'll get an idea on what kind of GM he'll be here soon but Mr. DeWitt has got to let him do his job though. For now I'm gonna have to include my thoughts on Mo being GM with an asterik until we see if Mr. DeWitt will allow a legit improvement to this team but so far I'm ok with Mo.
Luddy- A ( A+ if he wasn't so streaky)

Skip- B (would without a doubt be an A if he could hit lefties better)

Ankiel- C+- Dude has got to stay healthy

Duncan- Yeah, I bet ya'll were betting I'd give him an F but I give him and Incomplete for the overall season but if we are grading defense he gets an F. He has not improved AT ALL and has got to be one of the worst we've seen.

Barton- Incomplete I want to see him after a full year in AAA or have TLR give him more chances if he is here.

Mather- C .....still young but showed he can play defense, has got to learn those breaking pitches better.

Stavi- D......I don't know if he's ready for the ML's but he didn't show me a whole lot after doing pretty good in AAA.

I hope nobody expects me to grade FeLo, Miles and Kennedy in the OF  [8 total replies]
