ST. LOUIS – Injured starter Kyle Lohse threw an aggressive 50-pitch bullpen session Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium, his first throws off a mound since landing on the disabled list on May 23. Lohse, who had surgery to repair the injured forearm in late May, “cut loose” with all of his pitches during the 15-minute session in the Cardinals bullpen.
“I threw everything just like a regular long bullpen,” Lohse said. “I threw everything like I would normally. A little funky on a couple just from lack of being on the mound but everything felt like it came out really good. I threw some good pitches. I’m excited that today went good and I’ll have to check when I can get back out there.
“I knew coming into it that I was going to be able to get after it and I did. It was a good session. I threw all of my pitches. It was a mixture between a regular bullpen and a warmup. I was pretty much cutting loose with stuff but still trying to stay under control because my mechanics are a little funky right now.”
Lohse and the Cardinals still don’t have a timetable for his return, but its fair to say now that the right-hander will likely return before starter Brad Penny, who was injured a day before him but was expected to miss just two weeks. |

Well, glad to see at least one of them appears to be making progress. I don't know the Cards are going to get much more from Penny this year. _________________

ST. LOUIS - Kyle Lohse threw his second 50-pitch bullpen session in three days Monday afternoon at Busch Stadium and plans to face hitters for the first time on Wednesday.
Lohse, on the disabled list since May 23 with a forearm injury, had been playing catch for the past few weeks but hadn’t gotten on the mound until Saturday. After just one day off Sunday, he was back on the mound for another aggressive session on Monday.
“Today was about as good as it can get,” Lohse said. “My stuff was sharper today. It felt really good. I threw everything and pretty much cut it loose today. It was all positive. I threw about as hard as I would want to ever. I try not to go back to old form of trying to throw as hard as I can, but everything was moving, the sinker had some sink today. Everything was good.” |

| I think this puts Suppan and Hawksworth on notice that one of them won't be in the rotation much longer, which might improve both of their games. It's a poor decision to drop someone from your organization, which I think gives Suppan a bit of an edge, especially considering that you don't want him to continue to improve and then have to face him in the postseason. Alternatively, Hawksworth has shown much more than any other person they have put in that spot in the rotation this year and may be good enough to hold the spot in the future. With all that said, it would be huge for the team to get the Kyle Lohse of 2008 back. |

I think it makes Salas the odd man out. Either Soup or Hawk starts and the other is long relief for that game and Lohses' game. _________________ "Those that don't read have no advantage over those who can't." Mark Twain

In the short term, i'd say Salas goes back down. Once Lohse gets settled back in (assuming he's effective) though, I think Soup's reunion tour is about over.
A lot can change between now and then though, guess we'll just have to sit tight and hope for the best out of Kyle. _________________

Lohse in a rehab start pitching for Memphis tonight against Oklahoma City:
3 IP, 2H, 0 BB, 1 ER, 3 K (43 pitches).
Solid enough, but the opposing starter was Rich Harden, also on a rehab assignment, whose line was 6 IP, 2H, 1 BB, 0 ER, 10 K. _________________ Sometimes the Best Trades are the Ones You Don't Make |

Its always nice to see someone on the DL finally progressing. Freese has the setback...Penny kept getting pushed back. We have maintained but we need to get some guys back for sure and at this point Lohse would be a welcome surprise in my mind. _________________ St. Louis Cardinal Fan for Life. |

| So when is Lohse scheduled to pitch again? Probably over the weekend. I see Suppan is suppose to start on Saturday. I'm guessing Lohse is not ready to return to the rotation yet. Hopefully he has another good and longer outing the next start. |
