Cards Hire McGwire As Hitting Coach
By Steve Adams [October 25 at 4:40pm CST]
Pat Lackey informs us that a Cardinals source confirmed to Fanhouse's Ed Price that Mark McGwire has been hired to replace Hal McRae as the St. Louis hitting coach. |

True or not, I'm wouldn't be sure about this either? I mean I would have to think Big Mac would be good for the 'power hitters', except Pujols maybe, but what about the hitters who can't hit for power? Stay tuned..... _________________

Whoa. This was one of the last things I expected. I really hope it works out. For the Cardinals sake and for Mac's. Say what you will about him, but he's a good guy and i've always liked him as a person, if not so much for what he did during his career and how he handled them (or lacktherof) after. _________________

Skip Schumaker has been working with him in the offseason, and it seems like he's been really helpful.
I'm thrilled about this. McRae was positively awful, and McGwire has been doing a lot of good work with guys in the offseason. It'll be cool seeing him back in Cardinal red. |

I saw this on one of the news sites, then went to the Cardinals own site and it was sort of confirmed.
I think it will be a good move for the Redbirds... but I also tend to agree with Mad Hungo, "what is he going to do for the non-power hitters"? But if he can teach them to hit... that's what he needs to do to earn his pay.
Good move... I think. _________________ Go Cardinals!

| I think Yadi has strength, but limited power. I hope he makes him into something more of a home-run threat. I hope he does wonders for Rasmus, Freese, and Ryan also. |

I know people are skeptical about this... But I have a hard time believing management would hire the guy if they thought all he could bring was a 'how to hit ball far' strategy. Fact is that the majority of these hitters have their own routines and strategies that they follow. A hitting coach is used to help them stay on their game, watch swings, give advice and help them bust out of slumps when they need it. I'd think Mac would be a pretty good candidate to do that. _________________

No kidding ......... I heard they also wanted Pete Rose to come on board as a 'Player Financial Adviser' but the Commissioner's office said no.
This would be a pretty radical move IMO, both for Mac & the Cards. He's been completely out of MLB since 2001. He's declined annual invitations to come to Spring Training as a ST hitting instructor. He's never held a coaching position of any kind, in any organization at any level.
Holy Cow.
Wow ........... just wow ............. |

So much for having credentials to get hired for a job. I guess we know what one of LaRussa's conditions were for returning as manager. _________________ Sometimes the Best Trades are the Ones You Don't Make |

Wish I'd known. I was a heckuva hitter as a kid, also crushed the ball in over a decade of slow-pitch softball, only been 18 years since I played. However, I coached youth hardball teams for 15 years including freshman & sophomore Summer HS teams. Had a cage & Iron Mike on my property for 6 years, coached my Son & other kids here thru Senior years of HS. So ............ I actually have a lot more hitting coach experience than Big Mac.
I shoulda sent Mo a resume, I'd have worked pretty cheap.
Some how this reminds me of the "but Palin has more executive leadership experience than Obama" 'discussions'

Didn't expect that to happen, and I just hope he doesn't start giving Pujols steroids. _________________ Indiana Basketball :1-0
